Trekathon Season Review: Lower Decks, Season 2

I’ll just do a brief review for the season again – after all, at 10 twenty minute episodes it’s about the same duration as five full live action episodes.

Not as strong as last year, and didn’t deliver on the promise of the setup from the end of Season 1. There’s some good episodes in there, in particular “wej Duj” and the season finale. But the balance between fan service and good plot was a bit uneven, and character development seemed to have less of a focus.

One strength was having a bit more of an overarching plot with the Pakleds, with the promise of more on that next time around. But the show is probably at its best when it’s either setting new ground, or strangely when it’s drawing on TOS – something about callbacks and references to that era seem to land more strongly than the DS9/TNG/VOY era.

Overall, towards the top of the Mixed Bag category, a little netter than Discovery’s first season. Bringing the overall rankings to:

The very best of Trek:

– PIC Season 1
– TNG Season 6
– DS9 Season 2

Strong performers:

– LD Season 1
– DS9 Season 5
– TNG Season 3
– TNG Season 5
– TOS Season 2
– DIS Season 2
– ENT Season 3
– TNG Season 4
– VOY Season 4

Mixed bag:

– TOS Season 1
– DS9 Season 4
– LD Season 2
– DIS Season 1
– ST Season 2
– DS9 Season 1
– ENT Season 4
– ST Season 1
– VOY Season 5
– ENT Season 1
– VOY Season 1
– TNG Season 7

Not good:

– DS9 Season 3
– DS9 Season 6
– VOY Season 6
– VOY Season 3
– TNG Season 2
– ENT Season 2
– TAS Season 1

Really just awful:

– VOY Season 7
– VOY Season 2
– DS9 Season 7
– TOS Season 3
– TAS Season 2
– TNG Season 1

Next up – Star Trek Prodigy, the young adult animated series. New territory in terms of demographic targeting, so will it work for all?
