Time travel maybe? We do seem to be hitting the classics so far this season. Spoilers.
It’s been a while since a pure Star Trek story, and this was a really good one. The story itself is one that could have fit into practically any of the series, what makes it different here is purely doing it through the characters of this particular series.
The thing that I was most impressed by was the ‘micro acting’ – things like Uhura responding to being under stress by talking too much, the way Chapel sees a new thing with joy while La’an has wariness. Overall the episode took a simple premise and elevated it through acting and writing.
My only complaint is an odd one – given the title I kept expecting some time related twist, like de-ageing or time travel. I’m glad there wasn’t one, but it was a rare occasion of the title of the episode impacting the way I watched it.
Quick hits:
-
‘Ancient man’ – racist and sexist, get woke man!
-
Chapel and Korby are a cute couple.
-
Lovely bit of acting from La’an when asked how Spock is – you could almost see the thoughts racing through her head.
-
‘We’re all adults here’ – if this was Lower Decks everyone would be turned into a child inside of three minutes.
-
Ah, there’s the documentary subplot,.
-
La’an’s ‘fascinating’ suggests she’s been spending a lot of time with Spock.
-
Once again I am asking – who is keeping the ancient machines operating, repaired and lubricated.
-
Seriously Chapel, can’t you give Spock a couple of minutes to report in at least? There isn’t any kind of ticking clock going on here.
-
I wonder if the similarity to the Precursor site in Discovery is intended.
-
Ancient transdimensional escape room puzzle?
-
There are a number of ways that crossing the empty space could have been done with more safety.
-
OK, so if Gamble is dead who did the intro VO? Great mystery setup!
