Well I’ll be surprised if it’s a serious episode I suppose. Spoilers
I really loved this one, it had my eyes locked on screen the whole hour.
This is the most that Star Trek has ever been about Star Trek. There are really a lot of ways this episode could have gone very badly wrong, but it managed to carefully navigate all of them. For instance, it needed to be a mystery worthy of La’an, which it delivered very well. And it needed to make all of the 60s Trek stuff atmosphere, not the point of it all.
It’s a Holodeck malfunction episode in its purest form, but it might also be the best one ever. The actors got to have a lot of fun playing other characters, and the ‘show within a show within a show’ of The Last Frontier was absolutely pitch perfect in capturing the jank of TOS.
There’s even time to do some character and arc development. Scotty doesn’t want to ask for help was a bit on the nose, but at least they gave it a bit more depth in terms of backstory. And La’an/Spock is a bit sudden, but it’s nicely developed from La’an’s side at least. Sadly for her it does have all the signs of a rebound relationship for Spock
Quick hits:

This may be the first time that we’ve seen a genuine parody of TOS in Star Trek.
-
The details in the ‘whatever this is’ 60s parody are incredible. Lighting, sounds, acting, costumes, monsters. It’s beautifully done.
-
Oh, even the singing in the credits.
-
It has actually been a while since a Holodeck episode. I’ll be surprised if we don’t see some malfunctions.

That is a fantastic excuse for just recasting everyone into the holodeck.
-
Callback to the ridiculous ‘spoke is related to Doyle’ joke.
-
Someone really liked Knives Out I think.
-
This has a lot of resonance with the TNG Moriarty episodes. I wonder if there’ll be a real callback.
-
Scotty really needs to learn to ask for help.
-
How do you precision guide a diode exactly?
-
Glad that there was a sensible assessment of the risks of the Holodeck.
-
L’an/Spcok came out of nowhere, but it feels pretty earned still.
-
I genuinely laughed out loud at the Riker and chairs joke.
