Once more unto the two parter. Spoilers.
I really enjoyed this as a wrap up to the season, but found it strangely rushed overall. To the point where there were a couple of ‘fade to black’ cuts where it felt like the show had been trimmed slightly.
But it brings everything I want as parts of a finale – some good character moments, especially for Dal and Gwyn, that reflect their growth and change this season. There are also some fun and well paced action sequences, and a sense that the finale is happening on about five different fronts at once.
It was a bit surprising how much of the plot was wrapped up in this first half, with really just the Loom left. I suspect that this is because based on the structure of the show a lot of space is needed for epilogue material in the next half, but we’ll see
Quick hits:
-
I love how ‘high effort’ the animation in this show is.
-
Woof, that is some clumsy ‘explain the plot’ exposition.
-
‘We will hold the line’ – gotta love Janeway!
-
Awww, love you Rok.
-
We couldn’t give the kids an armed escort or something?
-
Weird cut around 9 minutes in, which felt like it was missing a minute or two show.
-
Feeling a bit of the pain of how complex the plot has got for a kids show in this exposition scene with Crusher and co. It’s honestly one of the clumsier bits of technobabble problem solution in Trek.
-
This feels a lot like the boss level of a video game in the staging – nice combat arenas, quick-time events, escalating attack patterns.
-
I was expecting the ‘hero steps up from abyss’ shot, but bringing the robot head was a nice touch.
958 down.
