Trekathon 545: The Siege of AR-558 (DS9)

Sisko and a few others visit an entirely different genre.

A war movie done badly in a show that isn’t a good fit for it. Way too much whispering in dark scenes. The Jem’Hadar appear to be commanded by [Douglas Haig](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Haig,_1st_Earl_Haig). Don’t bring Dad to a battle. And cliche theatre with the red shirts of the crew. Not to mention Sisko’s insane decision to stay in the first place – he has better things to do with his time, and he knows that.

My biggest problem with the episode is actually that they messed up the metaphor. I got the impression that the first draft was about Sisko complaining about the casualty numbers, and then the end would be ‘they’re not just numbers’. But someone remembered about the casualty lists with names, and so it has to become ‘they’re not just names’, which doesn’t have the same resonance.

545 down, 192 to go.
