The first ‘real’ Star Trek time travel story (Naked Time doesn’t count – time travel wasn’t really used in that episode – in fact, it was originally meant to be a device to lead in to this episode).
It’s OK, but misses out on its opportunities. The pilot snatched from his own time is given almost no chance to be amazed at how far things have come in the future. In fact, his reaction seems remarkably underplayed.
The end of the episode also begs the question that most time travel in SF produces: what theory of time travel are they using. As the answer here appears to be ‘whatever makes the writer’s job easiest’ it’s a little unsatisfactory. Time travel is much more interesting with tighter rules (hear that, Doctor Who?).
